PM Calls for Strengthened Leadership to Turn Challenges into Opportunities

PHNOM PENH, 21 November 2024 — Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized the urgent need for the Royal Government to enhance its leadership mechanisms to transform challenges into opportunities. Speaking at a plenary session of the National Assembly (NA) this morning, the Prime Minister outlined his vision for improving the effectiveness of governance in key areas, including foreign affairs and trade.

The session, held at the National Assembly Palace under the chairmanship of NA President Khuon Sudary, also saw the unanimous approval of Prak Sokhonn as the new Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Sokhonn replaces Sok Chenda Sophea, who will continue as a Deputy Prime Minister.

"The Royal Government must strengthen its capacity and leadership to address challenges and leverage them as opportunities," Hun Manet stated. He highlighted the importance of a flexible and pragmatic foreign policy rooted in independence and international law. His vision includes safeguarding Cambodia’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity while fostering peace, stability, and justice.

The Prime Minister stressed the need for sustained engagement with key international partners to enhance bilateral and regional cooperation. He also emphasized Cambodia’s role in addressing global challenges, highlighting the country’s commitment to promoting peace and stability.

Congratulating Prak Sokhonn on his appointment, Hun Manet expressed confidence that Sokhonn’s extensive experience in diplomacy, coupled with Sok Chenda Sophea’s expertise in trade and investment, would significantly bolster the government’s ability to navigate complex international issues.

Prak Sokhonn, who previously served as Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister from 2016 to 2023, has held numerous high-ranking positions and served as an ambassador to various countries. His appointment is seen as a strategic move to strengthen Cambodia’s presence on the international stage.

These developments underline the government’s commitment to fostering a leadership model capable of turning adversity into progress and advancing Cambodia’s national interests in an increasingly interconnected world.
